John Duprey - Cognitive Computing Summit, 2018

Iā€™m John Duprey, a distinguished engineer for Thomson Reuters. Iā€™ve been in the software development industry for nearly thirty years - working in applied research and development of ai-based solutions for professionals such as lawyers, tax professionals, etc. Iā€™ve primarily worked in the areas of search and recommendation systems for news and legal vertical search. Most recently, I helped develop and deliver Thomson Reutersā€™ first generative AI solution.

While Iā€™ve spent many years in management as a senior engineering director, Iā€™ve recently transitioned back to an engineering focus - a ā€œdistinguished engineer.ā€ Iā€™m a software engineering generalist at heart. Iā€™m not an AI or machine learning expert, although given the area I work in, Iā€™m often considered one. I bring a broad range of software engineering skills to bear on problems and I enjoy working with those who are truly experts in AI and ML.

I love open source and have been an advocate for Linux since the early nineties. My enthusiasm for Linux peaked in 2001 when I published TurboLinux Bible. Since the release of Mac OS X, Iā€™ve enjoyed a beautiful desktop experience with solid ā€˜Nix underpinnings.

I enjoy science fiction and fantasy and am impatiently waiting for the next release of Brandon Sandersonā€™s next book in the Stormlight Archive series.

Iā€™m a husband, father, and cycling enthusiast. My life is so much richer for it.
